I was very happy with the Scoop Free machine, but was getting a little fussy about the high cost and frequent changing of the replacement cartridges; we have one little lady-cat using the box, and expected each cartridge would last “roughly” a month. Instead, we find that before we quite reach the three week mark we’re starting to wonder whether that box ought to be changed…and by week three there’s no question. Out with the old! In with the new!…for sixteen bucks, grumble grouse…

Enter the Forever Litter Tray. It arrived with stunning speed and in perfect condition. It fit the Scoop Free machine perfectly, and works brilliantly. It is easy to maintain, with the hard plastic making for easy handling. Dump, rinse if needed, refill, done.

I’m a numbers kind of gal, so here’s the way I figure it on this: The cost of the throw-away catridges ran us about $15.99 on average. The Forever Litter Tray was $50.00 after shipping and taxes. One 8# bag of Fresh Step Crystals (the same litter that comes in the throw-away cartridge) runs around $13.99 (seems to go on sale for $11.99 fairly regularly, though) and gives us two refills of the tray. By my calculations, we’ll begin saving money on the 6th tray refill, when the cost of cartridges would be $95.94 while the cost of the Forever Litter Tray and ‘litter to date’ will be $91.97.

By the end of a full year’s use (refilling about every three weeks for our little lady), we should be coming out over $100 ahead by using the Forever Litter Tray. Awesome!

Feeling better about reusing the tray rather than throwing it away doesn’t hurt, either.

This adds maybe 3-5 minutes to your catridge-changing time. But after 6 months it will save you massive amounts of money. I just changed the litter for the first time since buying the Forever Litter Tray, and it was as easy as changing a cardboard cartridge. Just zip it out, dump the solid waste and crystals (use a sturdy bag for that– the crystals are heavier than they seem), wipe out the tray with a bit of cleaning spray and a couple paper towels, re-insert the tray, and pour in the fresh litter.

Money-wise, Crystal litter seems to run anywhere from $5-10.00 for a 4 lb. container (for one tray change) and $8-16 (2 tray changes) for an 8 lb container. Even if you go with the pricier crystal litter, you will start saving roughly 25-50% on cartridge changes once you pay for the tray itself. Additionally, the FLT is much sturdier than the disposable cartridges and leak-free. The plastic waste compartment is also really well designed, and works better than its cardboard counterpart. Finally, it means that there is one less thing you’re throwing away every month–Always good for the eco-guilt.

I’ll check in again after I’ve had it a few months, but I’m really pleased.

I ordered this product about 1 year ago and must say it works!! It will save you lots of money in the long run. I had the older version of the litter tray and a piece just broke (keep in mind this is after a year). The owner/manufacturer sent me a replacement immediately at no extra charge. I am very happy with the litter tray and especially with the service. If you are the owner of Scoop Free, I would highly recommend this piece!

  4. Recommend the Forever Litter Tray 100%!

Completely worth the cost! Repeat customer bought the first version of this tray & liked it.

Now have this newest Forever Tray & it is AWESOME!

It does NOT leak at all, thanks to the one piece construction.

It has a few little extras that make it perfect. Like the great material it is made of & 2 lid clips & a ridge to keep the solids in their compartment.

This tray certainly saves money. The cost & waste of disposable trays is just not reasonable. The original tray lasted a long time & I’m sure this one will last for much longer, many years.

This is quick & easy to clean.

I keep disposable vinyl gloves, Lysol cleaner, paper towels, garbage bags & new Scoop Free Crystals litter in the cabinet nearby – they actually take up less room than a stack of disposable trays. Sooo much less expensive!

The Forever Litter Tray is quick & easy to clean – I think it only takes 2 minutes more than the disposable.

Also, the company is great to work with – real old fashion service from Rick & his crew!

One side note – I have tried all the litter brands – Scoop Free is the only one to buy. Tidy Cat is ok – but don’t waste a dime on the cheaper brands – they do not control odor & wetness well.

Bottom line – Forever Tray saves money & is easy to use.

  5. The model now being sold is even better (and less expensive) than the original, and the original was a “must have”.

As many people (including me) have explained elsewhere, the ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box (sold by Amazon) is the best litter box I’ve ever bought: reliable, very easy to use, never jams, and easy to clean on the rare occasions that’s needed. The only drawback to it is the on-going cost of the replacement cartridges (about $16 here at Amazon). They last at most a month with one cat, or 2 weeks with 2 cats… that’s over $400/year.

The Forever Litter Tray replaces those disposable cartridges. It is a one-piece durable plastic shell, and you fill it will crystal litter instead of replacing the cardboard cartridge that comes with its own litter.

Target sells its own house brand of crystal litter in 8-pound containers for less than $12. The tray holds about 4 pounds, so each “refill” costs less than $6 (instead of $16). With two cats, that works out to $150/year instead of $400/year.

Now, that’s still a lot more expensive than using scoopable clay litter with a manual litter box, but a lot more convenient.

I’ve had the litter box and the original Forever tray for almost two years. That tray still is in fine shape and didn’t need to be replaced, but I was curious to see the new design. It’s better in all respects (stronger, better “floating lid”, and a low molded bar that separates the litter area from the waste area). And, the price is about $20 less than the original, which I’ll keep as a spare.

The tradeoff between the Forever tray and the disposable cartridges is price vs. convenience: the Forever tray + crystal litter costs much less over time, but it has to be emptied and occasionally cleaned, instead of just discarded. Also, a cat that loves to dig may cut through the liner of the disposable cardboard cartridges, allowing them to leak; that can’t happen with the Forever tray.
