You learn a lot from this book. It has both fun pictures, toy/game oppurtunites and a food guide, etc. A really fun, cool, interesting book! A must-have for raising a healthy guinea pig!!!

When my first piggie came to live with me I got one book, Peter Gurney's. However soon after I really wanted to learn as much as I could, so I bought many others, this was one. It is ok, it has really good basic information, but it is not complete. You should really look into other books as well, like The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs, by Peter Gurney.
Hope that this helps.

A very helpful guide for all owners of guinea pigs. What I like most of this book is the section on the guinea pig's body language. This is something that other guinea pig guide books do not have. Owners will learn from this chapter on how to communicate with their piggies better.
I have found that books from the "Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals Series" to be very helpful in terms of care of the pet for any pet owners.

I remember taking in Gweeker, a sweet mixed breed silver and white guinea pig who was being aboused by the other guinea pigs in her pen at the pet store. I suddenly realised I didn't know much how to care for her. One of the first books I bought was this one--and I still thumb through it frequently. That was nearly six years ago. The charts and the lists of good and bad foods for guinea pigs are PRICELESS. Also a bonus are clearly described signs of normal guinea pig behavior and abnormal signs, so you can immediately recognise when to take Piggy to the vet. There are some shortcomings--breeds are not clearly identified in the photos, breeds that are new here in the US are obviously not in there. Also, it is known now that red cedar is BAD bedding for guinea pigs--that fact is not mentioned. This is translated from the German (and is more enjoyable and informative a read than most guinea pig books written by native speakers of English). It does have a European viewpoint of taking care of guinea pigs, so take some advice like picking wild plants for Piggy to eat (too dangerous to do in the US) with a grain of salt. Overall, though, I think Gweeker and the rest of the piggies in my life are glad I bought this book.

This book is an excellent first book for a new Guinea Pig owner. It is written in very clear English and discusses almost every major topic that would concern a new pet owner. Each chapter is focused and easy to follow. Information is not cluttered with a lot of technical detail. Any child (8+) should be able to read this book with little difficulty. The chapter on Guinea Pig communications is priceless. Many a pet owner has wondered what a certain sound means, now they will have a much better idea of what their pet is trying to communicate. The photos are all of fairly young animals, which are especially cute! The index is wonderfully complete and accurate. In all, a well written and well laid out book for the new Guinea Pig owner

I am so glad that I was referred to Natural Defense at my local holistic dog supply store. I really want to raise my dog as naturally as possible, which means avoiding poisonous medications and feeding him as naturally as possible. (I was feeding the BARF diet before but have taken up EVO kibble lately, next best thing.) Natural Defense is a combination of essential oils, hence the strong smell. But actually, I love the smell! It is like dog cologne, it's wonderful! And my dog doesn't mind it at all, no problem putting it on him, and he is usually moderately wary of anything besides a collar on him. My dog is white and the oil leaves a little bit of yellow on his fur, but it's really not too bad and does go away naturally. Also, that's how I know I've got it on his fur and not close enough to his skin, or that I've put too much in one spot.
All in all, in combination with a good diet, this product works very well. We find maybe one flea every six weeks, pretty much a while after we forget to give him another application.

I too avoid putting anything ending in -ide on my animals. I have two lab mixes (70+ pounds each) & have great success with this product. Yes, the scent is strong, but it goes away after a day or two, as does the oil on the coat. I used it all last summer and with regular application (1x month) it keeps the ticks & fleas safely at bay. I should mention that we have lots of trees and our property butts up against some woods.

I recently bought the under 15 pounds variety to try on my small toy poodles. I had been an avid user of the more expensive, vet supplied topical solutions for years. I wanted to try this because it is all natural and my smaller dogs which are all under 6 pounds can sometimes have bad reactions to chemicals, vaccinations, etc.
I had read both good and bad reviews and even some who stated that their dogs lost clumps and clumps of hair, etc.

Cons:
VERY strong odor for the first day. It is almost over powering. Very spicy type of scent.
My cream poodle stud now has a yellow streak along his back.
Product leaves your pets a little greasy for the first 12 hours or so but seems to be dry after that.

Pros:
All natural
No fleas found on any of the 3 that I tested this on within 24 hours!
They all seem to have a clean, faint spicy smell to them (Strong when first applied)
Lasts approximately 3 weeks before needing to be reapplied (says up to 4 weeks, 3 weeks is pretty good)
Costs one third the price of the more expensive vet supplied brands.

I by no means have a flea or tick problem here at my house. We get the occasional flea from time to time, but being a breeder I need to take action when they are first spotted. I do not need puppies to get overrun with fleas.

All in all, I like this product and would suggest it to others.

I've used this soley on our Siberian Huskies since last spring, we have only had one single flea since November of 2008 and that was when we were using Frontline Plus. My dogs seem to have no problems with the other pesticide laden topicals however I break out if I even touch them within 2 weeks of applying them. That isn't something I can live with. I have no problem with the smell, honestly I like it. One of our Huskies is mainly white with a small amount of grey and I have seen no noticeable staining of her coat, she has even competed in shows within 3 days of an application. If your animal gets greasy, you are probably applying too much in one place. I usually make three strips of it down their backs one in the center and then one each side of it about an inch away from the first. I apply it at night before they go to bed in their crates, the next morning I use a bristle brush to help work any remaining oil into their coats as I've said above I have shown dogs within 3 days of an application. If you are careful, you won't see oiliness.
For those of you who have pets with serious infestations, this is not going to help at all if you do not treat your house and yard! Even if you use topicals with pesticides without treating the environment the dog will again get covered in fleas. Vacuum everyday, wash their beds and if your dog has a lot of fury stuffed toys wash them as well. Use food grade diatomaceous earth in your yard.
Like ANY product applied to the skin and coat there is the potential for a reaction when it is applied on a sensitive animal. If you have common sense do a spot test before applying the entire tube! IF your pet is having a bad reaction, use Dawn dish soap to remove the oils and wash them off.
Let me also say that I would never ever use this product on a cat, they can not metabolize ingredients in essential oils (which is what this product is made of) so using it on them is asking for trouble.
I use a similar concoction that I make out of carrier oils and essential oils on myself for insect repellent and apply to the dogs legs if we are going somewhere where fleas and ticks are a major problem.

Thank goodness for Natural Defense. We have been struggling with the other poisonous options on our two shih-tzus. Poor Henry was having terrible & frightening reactions to them. With Natural Defense, the dogs have no reaction when we apply it, and we've not had fleas or ticks -- and this is the second month we've used it.

Only minor downside is the strong smell for the first few days after application. It's not a bad smell -- just spicy. My husband says it smells like "Christmas." Well, Christmas on over-drive.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a natural alternative to the chemical repellents.
